METIS is a Cambridge-based performing arts company/network, set up to pursue interdisciplinary projects using extensive research to engage with contemporary concerns and to explore innovative forms of connecting with audiences. A fascination with maps, space, technology, travel and history drives our work in a variety of media, with a focus on process, exchange and the development of networks and communities.

Third Ring Out3rd Ring Out

In development: With producer Bill Gee, director/researcher Zoe Svendsen and director/designer Simon Daw are developing 3rd Ring Out, a new performance installation investigating the process of rehearsing for worst-case scenarios of climate change.

A cross between an emergency planning rehearsal, a video game and a disaster movie, the project explores heroism, democracy, survival, and how we might collectively imagine our future.

We will be developing the project through workshops in Spring 2010, before touring the UK. The project has received a Tipping Point Commission Award (www.tippingpoint.org.uk).

The work towards the research and development of this project so far has been made possible by ACE East Escalator, the Cambridge Judith E Wilson Fund, and the OBSTT.

METIS: Greek Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, mother of Athena, lover of Zeus. A form of intelligence that is ‘always immersed in practice’, combining ‘flair, sagacity, intellectual flexibility, deception, resourcefulness, vigilant watchfulness, a sense for opportunities’ … ‘clever tricks, knowing how to get away with things, “hunter’s cunning”, manoeuvre, polymorphic simulations, joyful discoveries, poetic as well as warlike’.

- Michel de Certeau, Practice of Everyday Life.
