David Lee

experience / relation to hidden war space: Royal Observer Corps - see photographs
year of birth: January 1942
period covered in interview: 1967-71; 1977-91
place: Linton and Cherry Hinton
date of interview: 24th July 2007
After a Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship with the NCB, I joined Rolls-Royce until they went bankrupt in 1971. Ten years in the NHS supervising the maintenance of hospital engineering services followed, before I obtained the job of Deputy Director at Duxford airfield, until retirement in 1997.

I first joined the ROC in 1967 in No 8 Group on the Hucknall post near Nottingham but had to resign on moving to London in 1971. I rejoined in 1977 on the Rhoose post near Barry, South Wales in 12 Group, transferring to 4 Group in 1981. I served on No 28 Post, Linton for virtually all the rest of my ROC service, mainly as the Leading Observer who was also the post instructor. Early in 1991, I and another Linton post observer transferred to 10 Post, Cherry Hinton as Chief and Leading Observer respectively as the original team on that post had dwindled to just two in number, neither of whom wished to take on the NCO’s roles. The Corps was officially Stood Down in September 1991.
